We’re almost always excited when a new version of WordPress rolls out. (Yeah. We’re that nerdy.)

Version 3.9 of WordPress, named “Smith” in honor of jazz organist Jimmy Smith, just rolled out and we’ve updated all of the sites on our network last night. Most of the changes in this release are designed to give you a smoother editing experience when creating your pages and posts.

The editor has been updated to be smoother and more powerful with more streamlined design, and is now responsive for mobile and tablet designs.

Visual editing

No more Paste from Word box because the editor now strips out all of the messy styling that comes with copying from an outside editor.

Image editing

Need to crop or rotate your image? The tools are much more accessible within the editor. Plus, images can now be resized directly within the post editor.

Drag and drop images

No need to open the Media panel to add images to your post. You can now drag them from your computer to the post editor and go from there.

Gallery previews

No more boring gallery placeholder. Now you’ll be able to see how the gallery will look in your post when it’s published.

Audio and video playlists

This is completely new. Simple playlists to showcase your music and video clips.

Website customization

Now within the Customize page, you can add, edit and rearrange widgets right from within the customizer.
